Welcome to Fluco Blog! Where the news is Fluvanna News. All of the Time.
This is where we only care about Fluco news, an idea of our founder, Bryan Rothamel. With the help of his brother, Daniel Rothamel, Fluco Blog launched in Oct. 2009.
The idea is to cover the missing link. Already covering Fluvanna are two newspapers, the Fluvanna Review and the Rural Virginian. Both are EXCELLENT community newspapers. We have NO plans on trying to compete. We look to compliment them.
The major problem both papers have to work with is deadlines and print dates. As a journalism graduate of High Point University, Bryan dealt with the same issue while working with the student paper, the Campus Chronicle. The Chronicle came out every two weeks. The deadline was a week before the paper came out. The final, final, drop dead deadline was two days before print. By the time it printed, it was old news.
Old news is fine with features or meetings. Those do not need to be as timely. What about a sports event? If you wait a week you might have already missed two or more games. Then when you print again, you are five behind. Also when you go to print you have missed the boat on it.
That’s where the Fluco Blog comes in. We are trying to be timely. We want to get stories the other papers can’t get because of logistics. Do we want to cover the school board meetings? No. It is not because we don’t care, we care deeply. But we are not trying to compete with people that already do it and do it well.
For stories like school board meetings, we will direct you to the source. It might be a great article published in the Fluvanna Review. We will tell you either by Twitter, Facebook and/or website to go to their website to read the story. The Rural Virginian deals with Scottsville and Fluvanna. If they have a Fluvanna related article, we will tell you to check them out.
We are not here to fight with those two papers. We are here to help fill the gaps. Consider it this way: the current papers are like a car with bald tires. The car drives, drives well. It can go any speed you want but cornering is hard. We are just replacing the tires so you can now drive fast and corner. Get it?
We aren’t looking for a business model. See, the only money Fluco Blog gets is from ads placed by Google. That money goes directly to Bryan. He supports Fluco Blog with server space and serves as the “Editor in Chief.” The income those ads are expected to produce won’t even cover the server costs not to mention the one time cost of the theme package.
We don’t pay writers or contributors. You might ask, “Then how the heck will you get any contributors?!” Good question and one we debated. How can we get people willing to contribute without getting compensation?
We are for people who want to write, take pictures or just add a thing or two. We request any writer contributing to Fluco Blog if we can have permission to republish. We leave the rights to the story to the original owner, the writer.
If you want to write but don’t know if it is good enough, send it here first. Bryan will edit it using basic AP style requirements, help wherever he can and then post it for you! If you like it and want to send it to another paper or republish it somewhere else, go for it! If another paper sees it on Fluco Blog and wants to use it, they contact us, we contact the writer.
We envision novices of all sizes and shapes writing for us. The first true story on here is the first high school game and first football game Bryan ever covered. This is our way of trial by fire. At High Point University, Bryan wrote a terrible first article. It was a byline though and gave him practice. This is here for you to do the same!
Because we don’t depend on advertisers, we don’t mind having you make a mistake on here. If your story is lacking a powerful lede, ehhh. We will let it run then the next article will be better, then the next will be better and then you will win an award! Maybe not, but you get what we are saying.
Enjoy what we have here. If you are looking for some Fluco News, we hope you stay for a while. Remember, we can’t be your only source for Fluco News! Remember to check out the Fluvanna Review and the Rural Virginian! They fill the gaps we miss.
