This is getting really cool

FlucoBlog.com started as a little daydream a few months ago. Now we are a force in local news in Fluvanna County.
We started the site with what we thought were lofty goals. We wanted 30 fans on Facebook and maybe 25 hits per week on the site. We have over 300 fans and our fan page gets about 50 hits a day! Our website is viewed just over 25 times per day! That’s good news.
With this, we are quickly realizing we need to expand because it is obvious you like what we have done.
We have a calendar with local events. We have made a custom search engine so you can search not only our website but also other local news organizations’ websites. We live update events via Twitter updates and Facebook updates. We delivered Fluco Decision 2009 where the Fluvanna results were up faster than any other news organization and were only about Fluvanna.
Well, that was only the start.
We have started a partnership with the Fluvanna County High School journalism program. Students will be publishing stories under the author FCHS Journalism. At the bottom of each article will be which student wrote the article. Our first one published on Nov. 10 from senior Courtney Tyree.
Another new feature FlucoBlog.com will roll out is “columnists” (we like the term blogger better
). While we won’t rely heavily on opinion and such, we do feel it is important to hear from those in political power. Our first agreed blogger is a web 2.0 savvy politician.
Shaun Kenney, Supervisor-Elect for Columbia, will write about issues facing the county and the Board of Supervisors. A tidbit from his personal weblog:
Shaun has appeared as a guest on ABC News, CBS News, Fox News, NPR and BBC; and his work has been featured in USA Today, The Guardian, Roll Call, The Hill, Politico, Townhall, RedState, Washington Post, The Washington Times, Time Magazine and the Denver Post.
He can soon add FlucoBlog.com to that already impressive list. We are hoping that more local politicians will see this and want to join in on the discussion. We said it before, other publications already do a great job at covering the meetings themselves. We think we fit into the puzzle by talking about what is behind the meetings.
Finally, we are looking at ways of doing live webstreams from events from around the county. We are going to first experiment with basketball games at FCHS. If it works well and you enjoy it, we will move to doing meetings and such. The biggest hurdle we face is internet connectivity and upload speed. We will work with what we can. Regardless, how cool would it be to be able to watch a School Board meeting if you couldn’t/didn’t want to make it down to Palmyra?
These are a few things on the burners for us. If you have a suggestion or would like to help Fluco Blog, please e-mail us at news@flucoblog.com or call our tip line (434) 207-TIPS. We hope you are as excited as we are for what the future holds for Fluco Blog!
