Superintendent field set

PALMYRA — The Fluvanna School Board has a field of 14 in the search for a new superintendent.

Most of the applicants come from Virginia but there are one each from Pennsylvania, California, Georgia and Maine.

The search for the highest position in the school system is conducted with the help of the Virginia School Board Association. The VSBA helps with work typically done by a human resources department. The association also advises the board.

The School Board originally wanted to name a superintendent by July. No word if there will be a hire by month end.

Currently, Maurice Carter is the interim superintendent until a permanent hire happens. Carter took over July 1 as eight-year superintendent Dr. Tom Smith retired.

The 14 candidates have a mixture of experience. Six have superintendent experience. Two assistant/deputy superintendents and central office administrators each. There are four principals or building administrators.

The School Board has announced a series of closed meetings during a 15 day period starting on July 6.

I am hoping that a true list of the candidates will be made available to the public. Since the FSB sought the input from its citizens, I would think the process would be more open, allowing each candidates qualifications/strenghts, etc. to be evaluated individually by all interested persons.
