Baseball pounds 10 hits but falls short
PALMYRA — Monticello’s pitching was just too much to handle as the Flucos fell 9-2 Wednesday night.“[Monticello's] order, 1-9, hit the ball and they make you play defense. We made some errors, threw it around a little bit and they took advantage of it,” Fluvanna head coach Nick Ward said.
Fluvanna had three hits total compared to seven Mustang hits. Hannah Miller, Ashleigh Harris and Alex Fields each had one hit a piece for FCHS. Harris and Shannon Opie scored the two runs for the Flucos.
With Fluvanna already trailing by six in the bottom half of the third inning, Opie reached base by a dropped third strike. Harris plated her with a double to left field. After a pass ball moved Harris to third, senior Chelsey Blevins’ sacrifice fly scored Harris.
“A lot of us are young so that was are first time hitting with a pitcher with good movement. I think we did ok but not up to our level,” Fields said.
The Mustangs’ pitcher, Victoria Scott, was lights out recording nine strike outs which included every spot of the order but two. Scott is the reigning first-team all-district pitcher.
Fluvanna (2-4, 1-1 Jefferson District) next travels to Louisa on Friday. Game time is set for 7 pm in the town of Louisa.
