Snow days accumulate

February 5, 2010 by Bryan Rothamel · View Comments

Palmyra — Fluvanna County Public Schools have now been closed four days including Friday’s closing.

Luckily, FCPS built the schedule to anticipate school closings to minimize days needing to be made up.

The FluCo public schools have five days ‘banked’ in the school year. That is, Fluvanna can miss up to five school days without having to make a single day up.

After the first five initial days, students then are scheduled to make up the next five school days.

The first day that is designated as a inclement weather makeup day is Feb. 15. The next day to become a makeup day is March 12. The last three days to be used as a makeup days are scheduled to extend the school year until May 26.

If Fluvanna misses more than 10 days, the division can apply for a wavier if the school closings resulted from a declared state of emergency under certain circumstances. The waiver is submitted to the Virginia Board of Education.

In the wavier, the division has to show how it made an effort to reschedule as many days as possible. The superintendent and Fluvanna School Board chairperson must certify that every reasonable effort was made to make up missed school days.

If the wavier is denied the division must make the missed instructional time up. Virginian schools are required to be in school for 180 teaching days or 990 teaching hours.

The last time Fluvanna schools missed significant time was 2002 where Spring break was cancelled. Schools missed over 13 teaching days.

Students currently are scheduled to end the scholastic year on May 21. The high school graduation/commencement will be on May 22.

Wintry precipitation is predicted next midweek and next weekend. Farmer’s Almanac predicts snow many times over the rest of February and most of March.
