Pipeline plans narrowed down

PALMYRA — The Fluvanna Board of Supervisors heard from the director of public works on progress from the Citizens’ Water Committee.

The water committee was created by the board to look at the feasibility of bring water from the James River to Zion Crossroads. The committee has at this point narrowed choices down to four options, each with phases and just a general idea rather than a specific plan.

“Phasing will be an important step in the process,” Robins said.

Donald Weaver, Cunningham District, is still skeptical in the reason a water line might be needed.

“I want to know where these needs are.” Weaver continued, “I don’t know if there is a need.”

One plan still in debate is to do nothing. There is a concern with the money issue and is titled, “The county is broke.”

A second plan includes having a raw water line from the James River through the county to the Zion Crossroads area. Developers would have to build a treatment facility in order to utilize the water.

A third plan has a treatment facility at Pleasant Grove, therefore having raw water coming from the James River, up the ETCI line then to Pleasant Grove. The water line would go to Zion Crossroads via Lake Monticello.

The final plan still being debated is an Aqua America plan that would take water from the James River, up the ETCI line, through the Colonial Pipeline to the Aqua treatment facility at Lake Monticello. Water would be distributed south on Route 53 and North to Zion Crossroads.

The Citizens’ Water Committee will continue to discuss the plans before making a final recommendation to the Board of Supervisors.
