Chad White, center, talks to his team before the
start of the fourth quarter on Jan. 4
“We gave, probably, the best team in the district everything we got,” said FCHS head coach Chad White.
The Flucos were led by Kiána Childress with 21 points. Kate Stutz put in six points while Ashleigh Harris finished with five points.
FCHS found ways early to break past the active Mustang defense and holding tight in a zone defense. Three minutes into the second quarter Monticello held a 15-14 lead. Then MHS ended the half on a 10-2 run.
Fluvanna started the game well, holding a 6-2 lead just two minutes in. Monticello would fight back to tie the game with 3:24 left in the first quarter. The teams traded baskets the rest of the frame to end it 10-10.
“[Monticello's] defense creates their offense. They press the entire game. I told the girls if we could just take care of the ball, beat their press we are going to be able to play with them,” said White.
Next up for FCHS is district foe Charlottesville. The Black Knights fell to Western Albemarle on Friday night.
Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 8 in the city of Charlottesville.
