PALMYRA — The Fluvanna softball team scored two in the bottom of the sixth inning to knock off visiting Goochland Bulldogs 6-4 on March 15.
“[Goochland is] fundamentally sound, they do everything little thing there is about softball right, all the time. They are a very hard team to beat,” said Aimee McCall, FCHS head coach.
With two outs and a tied game in the bottom of the six, the Flucos had pinch hitter Amber Dillow on first after a walk. Kiersten Allen followed it up with a walk. After senior Ashleigh Harris got on, junior Mindy Lawson’s single plated Dillow and Allen for the final lead.
“I think [the team] really took a deep breath and settled in a little bit,” said McCall about the sixth inning.
In the pitching circle, Lexie Scott continued her steady work. With the two run lead, Scott was able to put the Bulldogs away in four batters.
Scott only gave up two runs while working out of the bases loaded in the fourth and a runner on third in both the fifth and sixth innings. The sophomore struck out only two but playing defense isn’t something that concerns the Flucos.
“We don’t have a batting cage right now, so we’ve done a lot of defense. They are comfortable defensively. Defensively they aren’t worried, ‘Lexie, don’t walk the players, let us play defense. We got your back.’ They do that pretty consistently and they did that tonight,” said McCall.
Next up for the Flucos is Spotslyvania on March 19. Game time set for 7:30 p.m. in Spotsylvania.
