Lady Flucos make waves at Waynesboro

Waynesboro — After coming back from a long and sluggish winter break, the Lady Flucos’ swim team didn’t miss a beat as they dominated a meet consisting of Waynesboro High and several private schools on Jan. 5.

The girls’ team won their meet 109-61, led by juniors Riley Scalzo and Chelsea Tomko, and senior Kasey Hartman. Hartman and Tomko recorded four state level times in the individual medley, 100-yard freestyle , 100-yard butterfly, and 100-yard breaststroke, while Michelle Caron recorded state times in the 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard freestyle relay.

Connie Banton, coach of the girls’ team, said, “The team this year is very impressive and we have a lot of depth.”

The team isn’t reliant on one or two “key players” as they so aptly demonstrated as the team dominated several events. Those events included the 50 and 100-yard freestyle, clinching the top three places in both races. The girls also dominated the relays, not only winning three of the four they were entered in, but clinching state times in all three–the 200-yard medley, 200-yard freestyle, and the 400-yard freestyle.

Although the Fluco boys’ team didn’t have such an impressive restart to the season, they still have faith and think they can bounce back during the remainder of the season.

James Barnett, a returning sophomore, said, “We have a very young and inexperienced boy’s team except for some returning members, but I think they have a lot of potential.”
