Fluvanna does it again

Fluvanna advances to the Jefferson District Championship and their fourth straight Region II appearance.

“We started off slow adjusting defensively and kind of picked it up throughout the game,” senior outside hitter Mandy Kline said.

Despite the Flucos being tested, they still swept Monticello 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-21) Tuesday night in the Jefferson District Semifinal.

After missing two weeks with pneumonia, Kline recorded 15 kills to pace FCHS. Senior Kayla Walker recorded six kills and aces apiece. First year Hannah Miller and senior Nicole Patterson finished with five and four kills respectively. Mia Loyd had two blocks with two kills.

“We knew if we just played our game, everything would just fall into place,” Senior setter Courtney Tyree said. Fluvanna did something they have done quite frequently. They now have won 21 straight games.

It wasn’t an easy road to their sixth straight swept. Fluvanna started the match scoring five straight before the Mustangs chipped into the lead by scoring their own five spot, bringing the score to 15-11. The Flucos only let MHS get within three before taking the first game.

“They made it difficult for us find a place to put the ball away,” Fluvanna head coach Christi Harlowe-Garrett said.

After trailing by three, FCHS rattled off eight straight on their first serve in the second frame. The Flucos never trailed thereafter to win and then took the third game to advance to play Western Albemarle in the championship.

“[Playing Western] is going to be a challenge. I think we are ready. There are a few things we need to work on, but overall it is going to be a good game,” junior Chelsie Tomko said.

With the win, Fluvanna also advances to the Region II tournament. The Flucos will play on the road to an opponent who won their district. This marks Fluvanna’s fifth appearance in the last six years and seven in Harlowe-Garrett’s 10 years.

“Western is a volleyball team, just like we are a volleyball team. If we go in and make more mistakes then they win. If we can force them to make more mistakes, then maybe we win,” Harlowe-Garrett said. “I think we have to play the ball just like we play the ball against anybody else. That’s all that matters.”

A win means a Jefferson District title for these two teams. Both are guaranteed an appearance in the regionals. Pride is the higher ante for the Flucos. Fluvanna lost to the Warriors 6-1 on the year. WAHS has only lost six games all year and has swept nine straight Jefferson District foes.

“Western is what we look forward to all year and we all wanted to play them again. Now we are getting what we wanted,” Kline said. “We just have to show up.”
