Flucos win despite sluggish start

Palmyra — Fluvanna shook off a slow start to defeat the Madison Mountaineers 43-32 Monday night.

“In high school basketball games you aren’t going to see 70 point games unless you get out in transition.” Fluco head coach Chad White continued, “Every time we came across half court we were playing against a set defense.”

K-anna Loyd lead all scorers with 19 points. Sister Mia Loyd put in 10 points of her own. Sarah Ryan and Millicent Williams scored eight and six points respectively.

Madison started the game scoring the first six points. After a K-anna free throw, Madison returned with another quick basket.

K-anna sunk a 3-pointer in the corner by way of an assist from Briana Burrus. K-anna then evened the score at six with field goal off of an assist from Lauren Key. The Flucos scored the final five points of the frame to take an 11-8 advantage.

To open the second quarter, Madison scored back to back baskets before K-anna found Williams cutting to the basket for a shot in the zone. Madison regained the lead by scoring two straight baskets. Fluvanna ended the half on a 12 point streak to enter the break up 22-16.

“We should have stopped them. Our defensive drills we do everyday — we should have stopped the back door cuts. It was lackadaisical kind of in that area [in the first half]. The second half we did better,” K-anna said.

Fluvanna had a difficult time stopping the famous Princeton style pass and cut offense Madison employed. It was so well ran even Pate Carril would be proud.

“It’s tough if you aren’t disciplined defensively — it’s tough to defend,” White said.

The second half started well for the Flucos as they stretched the scoring run to 18 points. Madison didn’t score a field goal for over 16 minutes, stretching from midway in the second quarter to midway through the fourth. The teams traded points until the final buzzer.

Madison was lead by senior forward Rachel Strahan with 12 points and junior guard Jordan Aylor with nine points.

Before the game, K-anna was honored for scoring her 1,000 point in an earlier victory versus James Wood. After the win against Madison, K-anna is now 64 points away from second all time on the Fluco career scoring list.

“I never thought I could get that. It is an achievement that not a lot of people can say so I’m glad I can say that,” K-anna said.

Fluvanna (7-1, 2-0 Jefferson District) takes to the court against Monticello (5-0, 3-0 JD) on Tuesday night in a match for first in the district. Game time is set for 7:30 pm at Monticello in Charlottesville.
