Palmyra — The Flucos opened the game with a 16-0 en route to a 61-37 victory over the visiting Monticello Mustangs.

“We figured, we wanted to jump on them early and see how [Monticello] would respond,” head coach Chad White said.

Monticello (8-10, 4-8 Jefferson District) was not able to stop the run even after calling two time-outs. Fluvanna (17-1, 11-0 JD) ended the first quarter up 25-3. FCHS led almost the rest of the way by over 20 points and even stretching the lead to 31 points.

“I’m proud, it was definitely a team effort. From the starters to the bench, everyone came out and did work — very proud of the team for doing that,” Mia Loyd said.

Fluvanna (VA-AA No. 8 AP) was led by the sophomore Mia with 19 points and senior K-anna Loyd scored 13 points. Terra Foster put in nine points and Ashleigh Harris finished with eight points. Both Loyd sisters ended with nine rebounds.

FCHS now sits only one game away from clinching the Jefferson District regular season championship. The last time the Flucos won the regular season was 1987.

“If we keep playing the way we play, the way Fluvanna plays, then [put] 2010 on districts,” Harris said as she pointed to the girls’ basketball championship banner hanging in the Shoebox.

FCHS next travels to Western Albemarle Monday night. A win punches Fluvanna’s ticket to hosting an opening round Region II Tournament game.

Harris said, “I don’t care if we played on Sunday. We are getting that Western game in.”
