Flucos tame Bulldogs

Fifth-year head coach Chad White address the team during a time out.

Palmyra — Fluvanna played stingy defense defeating the Goochland Bulldogs 56-20 for the second time this year.

“It was just one of those nights. I knew if we could get a couple of steals it would get us going. We just started out pretty sluggish and that happens sometimes,” White said.

Fluvanna was led by sophomore Mia Loyd who scored a game-high 13 points. Briana Burrus, K-anna Loyd and Millicent Williams all finished with 11 points apiece. Terra Foster put in six points.

Leading 26-12 after a uncharacteristic first half, FCHS outscored Goochland 13-0 in the third quarter.

“[The second half] was better because we actually ‘woke up,’” said Burrus who made three of four attempts from behind the arc.

The Flucos held GHS without a point for over 10 minutes, stretching from a minute left in the second quarter to just over a minute in the fourth quarter. Fluvanna had a 22-point run during the time span.

“I think we are averaging somewhere around 16 steals [per game]. Those are forced turnovers. That’s our thing, we are trying to get them (the other team) to turn the ball over as much as possible so we can get extra possessions. [The Flucos] executed tonight.”

K-anna, sitting just outside of becoming the second all time scorer in Fluco girls’ basketball history led the team with 10 points in the first half. She managed only one point in the second half. Her sister, Mia, scored none in the first half but 13 points in the latter half. The sisters could described like Dr. Seuss’ Thing 1 and Thing 2 out on the court.

“I think the fact that we played together for so long and we are with each other all of the time, we know each other’s strengths and weaknesses. On the court it helps a lot,” Mia said.

The coach described ‘selfless player’, K-anna added, “To me, some people are concentrated on their points, but as we’ve played more I think it is nice when everyone scores and there is a variety of scoring. As long as we win, that’s fine with me.”

Fluvanna (11-1, 6-0) has won six in a row and have outscored their past two opponents by 66 points. The Flucos sit two games up on Charlottesville and Western Albemarle for first in the Jefferson District.

“We are just taking it one game at a time. Like I told [the team], this thing is a marathon, not a sprint. We just have to keep winning so hopefully we can increase that gap from us and the teams behind us.”

The Flucos take to the road Tuesday night for a makeup game against Orange. Game time set for 7:30 pm in the town of Orange.

“We just have to prepare [for Orange] in the right way. Defense was really good tonight so those defensive drills really paid off a little bit. So we are going to be concentrating on our defense and keeping in tune with our plays,” K-anna said.
