“I told [the team] is is great to have the fun bunch back. We were back having fun. We weren’t worrying about stuff, we didn’t pout if something bad happened. We just said, ‘Ok, let’s get over it,’” said FCHS head coach Mike Sheridan.
The Flucos trailed 2-1 heading into the bottom of the third. Senior Cody Herndon started the inning with a double. Jovan Burton had a well placed bunt to put runners on the corners. Burton appeared to be picked off first but safely slid into second. On the throw from the first basemen to second to attempt to get Burton, Herndon scurried home to tie the game.
Designated hitter Dylon Garrett singled and advanced to second on an errant throw back into the infield. Cleanup hitter Austin Foster’s double down the line gave FCHS a 4-2 lead.
The Lions plated a run in the fourth and threatened again the next frame.
Fluco pitcher Bo Reed gave up a leadoff single in the fifth. After a six pitch walk, Reed struck out LCHS’ third batter on three pitchers. Then Reed induced a foul fly ball to the cleanup hitter. Another walk loaded the bases. Reed ended the threat with a four pitch strike out.
Reed finished with six strikeouts and three walks despite the two in the fifth inning. Reed pitched 102 pitches in his seven inning complete game performance.
“What I loved when he came off his sixth inning, he looked at me he said, ‘Coach, give me the ball. I want it.’ We needed seven innings out of him tonight. For a 10th grader to do that, in a district tournament game that is do or die, I thought that was huge,” said Sheridan.
Offensively, Burton lead FCHS with two hits and a walk in his three plate appearances. Burton scored two runs with two stolen bases. Herndon had three hits including his third inning double.
Fluvanna next plays Monticello at Louisa for the JD semifinals. The game is slated for 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21.
