Flucos stung by Hornets

The forecast of rain wasn’t the only thing putting a damper on Fluvanna’s Senior Night.
Orange County defeated Fluvanna 42-7 Friday night at Costello Stadium.
“We just got out to a fast start,” said Hornets head coach John Kayajanian. “Then the end of the game, with some of those penalties, just turned the score around. Other than that, I thought it was a hard fought game.”
The Hornets were led by junior quarterback Cameron Hughes who finished with 348 passing yards and two touchdown passes.
The Flucos split time at quarterback between senior Ryan Foster and freshman Christian Hackenburg. Fluvanna threw for 105 yards and rushed for 94 yards. Leading the ground attack was Foster with 61 yards on eight attempts.
Orange scored quickly, putting up 21 points in the first quarter. Back-to-back possessions Hughes connected for 72 and 75-yard touchdown passes respectively. Hughes’ first incomplete pass did not come until midway of the second quarter. He averaged almost 22 yards a completion.
“Orange has the capability to put up a lot of points because they toss it around to a lot of those athletes,” said first-year Fluco head coach Rodney Redd.
Fluvanna’s first three drives failed to get a first down. After a fumble recovery on Orange’s 27 yard line, Fluvanna marched down the field to their only score of the night. Foster ran the ball in from 34 yards out to get the six points.
Fluvanna used many players on both sides of the ball because of injuries and illness. Foster, Tyler Denby and YaYa Anderson saw significant time on defense and on offense in the second half.
“We had some guys that had to end up playing some spots they didn’t necessarily have practice at because of flu and because injury and because of things of that nature,” Redd said.
A bizarre turn of events happened with 6:41 left in the game. After an Orange point after touchdown, Fluvanna was penalized for two unsportsmanlike conducts, resulting in 30 yards. The ensuing kickoff was from the Fluvanna 30-yard line.
Orange recovered the on-side’s kick attempt and scored again on the next play on a 17-yard run by senior Greg Baldwin.
“I feel bad doing something like that, but you are at your 30-yard line. What are you going to do, kick it through the end zone?” said Kayajanian.
The back-to-back touchdowns brought the game to its final score, 42-7.
Fluvanna falls to 2-6 (1-4 JD). Orange improves to 4-4 (3-2).
Fluvanna takes to the field next Friday at Charlottesville. The Black Nights are coming off of a loss to Monticello. Fluvanna finishes their schedule at Louisa. Orange travels to Western Albemarle before ending the season at home against Charlottesville.
