Palmyra — Fluvanna fought their way to victory over the Western Albemarle Warriors 34-30 Friday night at the Shoebox. The Flucos held on despite only scoring one basket in the second half.

“[Defense] was what won us the game. People get confused because they see us score so many points but everything is predicated on the defensive end. We create, we get out in transition, we get a lot of steals,” Fluco head coach Chad White said.

The second half was a defensive struggle as both teams had difficulty scoring from the floor. The squads combined for five total baskets and four of those were for Western (6-4, 2-2 Jefferson District). Terra Foster scored the lone basket for Fluvanna (9-1, 3-0 JD).

“Western had some good defense, obviously. That’s the lowest we’ve scored,” said Mia Loyd who lead all scorers with 14 points. “They came out with good defense and we couldn’t execute on top. But, we pulled away with a victory and I guess that’s all that matters.”

Neither team scored a basket in the final frame until 5:30 left in the game. With Fluvanna up 26-23, the teams traded foul shots.

White said, “We come up with three crucial steals with time running down and they have to foul us. They lose a possession, we gain an extra possession then we have to knock down free throws, which we did at the end.”

Less than a minute to go WAHS abandoned zoned defense that they ran the whole night for a matchup set. Freshman guard Ashleigh Harris went to the line four times, sinking two to closeout the victory for Fluvanna.

“I was nervous but when they went in I felt real good,” Harris said smiling.

Senior forwards K-anna Loyd and Sarah Ryan ended with seven and four points apiece. Briana Burrus pitched in a 3-pointer while Millicent Williams, Harris and Foster ended with two points each.

The Flucos next return to action Tuesday against William Monroe. Game time is set for 7:30 pm in the town of Stanardsville. WMHS recently defeated Goochland to bring their district record to 2-3.
