Flucos look to end 28-year drought

March 5, 2010 by FCHS Journalism · View Comments

Fluco varsity girls’ basketball team will be playing in the first round of state playoffs on March 6. The last time a Lady Fluco basketball team won the state tournament was 1982 under the coaching of Feda Morton. It was the second of consecutive championships.

This year’s team is hoping to bring that championship back home.

“We have the ability and potential to be state champs, we just have to pull together as a team and make it happen,” senior and co-captain K-anna Loyd said.

The overall record for FCHS is a phenomenal 21-2 record. The team was the Jefferson District regular season champions and also went on to win the Jefferson District tournament.

The Lady Flucos went through the Region II Division 3 tournament and made it into the championship to earn an automatic bid to state playoffs. They lost in the championship game in regionals to top ranked Millbrook.

The team will play Greensville County, the Region I champions. They will have to put up a good fight to pull this one off. If the Lady Flucos win, they will head into the Final Four on Tuesday.

“We’ve talked about it, prepared for it, now we’re ready for it,” sophomore Terra Foster said.

Sophomore, co-captain Mia Loyd agreed, “We are pumped and ready and if we push it and play like we’re supposed to, then I think we will come out on top.”

The Flucos take on Greensville at the Siegel Center in Richmond, Va. Game time set for 11 am. A broadcast of the game can be heard on Fluco Blog Live! starting at 10:50 pm.
