ORANGE — If the Millbrook girls’ basketball team is Pioneers than the Flucos looked like first assistants. Despite shooting well from the free-throw line, Fluvanna couldn’t contain the top-ranked Millbrook Saturday night.
“Our whole season we haven’t faced anything like that. It’s been actually slower teams. So to come out and face team exactly what we do and the same speed we are, was a big wake up call,” Mia Loyd said following the game.
The Flucos (No. 8 AA AP) lost 65-52 behind 23 points from K-anna Loyd and 21 points from Mia. Millbrook (No. 1 AA AP) was powered by two-time Northwest District Player of the Year Courtni Green with 28 points and Sara Mead with 18 points.
“We just have to adapt to the speed. We are used to playing fast. They are fast too. Once we adapted to their speed, we were able to finish and do some good things,” Fluco head coach Chad White said.
The Pioneers came out in full court man-to-man that gave FCHS fits. Millbrook raced out to a 13-4 advantage before went on a 14-4 run of their own to take the first lead of the game midway through the second quarter.
Fluvanna came out of the break trailing 29-24 and Green went to work to stretch the MHS lead. The sophomore phenomenon scored 13 points in the third period.
“They needed that from her because with us making a run quickly and taking the lead in the second — she made some big plays,” White said of Green.
The Flucos trailed as many as 17 in the fourth quarter. They brought it within nine once but couldn’t close the gap.
“Our team knows we are really good. We think we should have beaten [Millbrook.] It’s simple, we should have beaten this team,” K-anna said. “I was just proud of everybody for getting their head together–bringing it back.”
Fluvanna shot 18 for 22 from the line but made only two 3-pointers. The Pioneers went 19-21 from the stripe and Green had all four of their baskets from deep.
“They are the number one team in AA. If they are the number one, we are 1b,” White said.
Fluvanna (21-2) next travels to play Greensville at the Siegel Center on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University. It will be a homecoming for the fifth-year coach White since he graduated from VCU in 2001.
Millbrook will play Warhill next weekend at Robinson Secondary School. The only way FCHS will play the Pioneers again is if both teams make it to the Division 3 Tournament Finals.
Game date and time will be set early next week. Check updates on Facebook and Twitter for the announced time and day.
