Palmyra — Fluvanna continued to score early and often as they defeated the Powhatan Indians 83-61 for the final day of the Fluco Bash. It was the second third game in a row Fluvanna amassed 80 points.
“We feel we have some guys that can run on the wing. We have two really good point guards that will get the ball out to them,” head coach Munro Rateau said. “We are going to try to take advantage of that.”
Senior forward Cameron Coles finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Flucos. YaYa Anderson was perfect from beyond the arc while finishing with 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
“Cameron is getting better everyday. He is getting out of his football body and into his basketball body. He does a great job for us around the basket,” Rateau said.
FCHS only trailed 2-0 before cruising to a 25-12 lead at the first break. Not much changed in terms of the margin as Fluvanna held a 44-33 advantage at the half.
Anderson scored 12 points in the first half, better than his performance against Prince Edward where he finished the game with nine points. Anderson said he had to get his stroke back.
“YaYa is such an explosive player that he can go in and rebound and stick it back in. He’s a great shooter so when they leave him open, he is going to score,” Rateau said.
Coles scored the majority of his points in the second half and even recorded a fast break dunk. Coles and Anderson were in company with scorers. Freshman Christian Hackenberg and junior Jamal Tolliver finished with 11 and 10 points respectively. Fluvanna’s bench outscored Powhatan’s bench 42-14. FCHS had every player but one score.
Coles, a transfer from Nelson County is feeling the love. He said the team has bonded individually.
“Chemisty, not being selfish [is working well]. If you see a person open, pass the ball,” Coles said.
Rateau added, “I think we had a lot of assists tonight. That is a result of the kids liking each other and playing hard.”
Powhatan’s only bright spot came from last year’s scoring leader, senior Shawn Minor. He recorded a game high 33 points.
The game before was much different than the finale. Prince Edward hit a buzzer beater to win 24-23 over Fluvanna’s Jefferson District foe, Orange County. Powhatan was the only winless team at the annual Bash.
Fluvanna (4-2, 1-0 Jefferson District) next plays host to Monticello (0-3, 0-3 JD) on Jan. 5, 2010. Game time scheduled for 7:30 pm in the Shoebox.
The game is a Fluco Blog Live! game of the week. Official broadcast start will be announced on the twitter stream. The game will not be a Fluco Blog Live! broadcast. Sorry for the miscommunication.
