Flucos fall in quarterfinals

Fluco captains Mia Loyd, Sarah Ryan and K-anna Loyd with head coach Chad White in the media room following the game.
“We just came up a little bit short. I don’t even want to say we lost the game. I just think we ran out of time,” Fluvanna fifth-year head coach Chad White said.
FCHS was paced by sophomore Mia Loyd with 22 points while senior K-anna put in 15 points of her own. Senior forward Sarah Ryan finished with five points.
Greensville led the whole game behind 25 points from Gabrielle Tyler who stands at 6 foot, 2 inches. Tyler had seven blocks in the first half alone.
“She is what she is. She’s big, she’s long. We weren’t going to back down from her,” White said.
GHS raced out to an early lead using the advantage of Tyler, a UNC-Charlotte signee. Fluvanna was able to chip into the lead and went into halftime only down three thanks to 14 points from Mia.
“With this group, we are resillient. [Greensville] came out, punched us in the mouth early. We started punching back. It was a battle to the end,” White said.
Out of the break, the Eagles scored the first nine points and Fluvanna never could fully recover. The closest the Flucos came the rest of the way was within five points.
This ends a historic season for FCHS. This is the first time a team other than Charlottesville has swept the Jefferson District titles and went undefeated. The district title was the first for Fluvanna since 1987. This is the first time since 1994 that the Flucos have been in the state tournament.
“Four years being on varsity we have only been to first round of regionals,” K-anna said. “At first I was just happy getting past first round of regionals. I was very proud and happy with my team they have taken us and allowed me and Sarah to come this far.”
FCHS expects to return nine players for next year’s run. Leaving the Flucos will be Ryan, the all-time career leader in blocks, and K-anna, single game record holder of rebounds and second all-time career leading scorer.
K-anna’s parting words for her team she said smiling, “We’ll come back and help them.”
The Flucos finish the year with an overall record of 21-3 and 15-0 against Jefferson District foes.
