Palmyra — The Fluvanna girls’ basketball team cruised to another victory Tuesday night. The Flucos dispatched the Powhatan Indians 59-35.
“We worked on, yesterday, our defense balance.” Head coach Chad White continued, “We went and tried to attack and get better of that yesterday. We did a good job today of not giving up easy baskets.”
Sophomore Mia Loyd paced FCHS with 28 points. Briana Burrus hit two 3-pointers and finished with seven points. Seniors K-Anna Loyd and Sarah Ryan put in seven and six points respectively.
Fluvanna never trailed in the renewed James River District rivalry. The Flucos scored the first eight points of the game and never looked back. FCHS held a 20-7 advantage after the opening quarter.
“I have a good feeling of our defense from now on. We got a good wakeup call on that (against Louisa),” Mia said.
The second quarter didn’t fare much better than the first for PCHS. Fluvanna outscored the Indians 12-6 and took a 32-13 lead into the break.
Mia scored 21 points in the first half. The Flucos used a steady defense to create many transition points.
“We push it. That’s our thing. We want to push it and look to get easy baskets,” White said.
Fluvanna (6-0, Jefferson District 2-0) next takes on Orange on Friday night. Game time is set for 7:30 pm in the town of Orange.
