Despite giving up a season high point total, Fluvanna girls’ basketball defeated visiting Louisa 76-57 Friday night.
“You never go in looking for that margin of victory. We just are going in looking to win the game,” fifth year head coach Chad White said.
Mia and K-anna Loyd combined for 47 points in the game. Mia had 24 while older sister K-anna put in 23. Sophomore Millicent Williams and senior Sarah Ryan scored 8 points a piece.
“Our point guards did a really good job looking up the floor,” sophomore Mia said following the game. “They did a good job looking for the open person.”
Louisa (1-3, 1-2 Jefferson District) wasn’t too much of a threat all night. The Flucos (4-0, 2-0) were able to attack the Lions’ zone defense from outside in. K-anna made three 3-pointers in the first half, all from the corners. When points weren’t coming off of setup offenses, Fluvanna used quick transitional plays to score easy baskets.
Fluvanna raced out to an early lead behind K-anna. The senior forward scored 19 in the first half. The Flucos took a 47-19 lead into the break.
FCHS didn’t let up as Mia Loyd lead the offensive attack scoring most of her 13 second half points in the third quarter. Fluvanna made the fourth quarter obsolete as they held a 28 point lead before heading into the final frame.
While White enjoys the victory, he didn’t pass up on the 38 points Louisa scored in the second half, double what the Lions scored in the first.
“Our defense kind of lacked a little bit. We didn’t get back in transition in the second half like I would like but we came away with a win. That’s what is important,” White said.
The players didn’t pass up on the notion either.
“We are working on transition d[efense],” K-anna said. “No letting them get into the paint. ‘Cause that helped us (on offense).”
Mia said in the locker room after the game defensive balance and help-side defense were topics of conversation.
The Flucos next play home against Powhatan. Game time is set for 7:30 pm in the Shoe Box. Last time the two met, Fluvanna won 58-39.
