FCHS organization spreads goodwill

Sometimes it’s the little things that make a big difference. FlucoShine, a volunteer organization of FCHS’ faculty and staff, helps to build morale in the school and the community. Small favors, pick-me-ups and sponsorship of families in need are just a few of the group’s regular activities.

“To show teachers that they’re appreciated – that’s our drive,” explains Danielle Mavrick, one of the leaders of FlucoShine.

Around the school, FlucoShine makes this clear. The committee posts cheerful birthday recognitions complete with balloons on the doors of staff members for their special day. FlucoShine also arranges stress-reduction events, tailgate parties and monthly get togethers for the Fluco faculty and staff.

However, FlucoShine doesn’t stop at supporting teachers, but carries their encouragement into the Fluco community as well. During the holidays, FlucoShine sponsored two families in need. Meal necessities were provided during Thanksgiving and gifts were given during Christmas.

How does FlucoShine do it? Besides having caring and considerate committee members, the group accomplishes its services through donations and community support.

“Anyone can bring anything in,” Mavrick elaborates. This year, the group decided to fund a scholarship in memory of FCHS staff member Jelks Morris, who died last fall. The scholarship will provide a free laptop to one or more FCHS students.

To raise funds for the scholarship, FlucoShine has created an original cookbook with 350 recipes called “Fluco Flavor.” The cookbook is available pre-orders for $20 for a limited time.

According to Mavrick, FlucoShine has been so popular that they may extend its reach. “There’s definitely a possibility of adding a student section of FlucoShine to next year’s club list,” she says. Much like Key Club, a national service student organization, “FlucoShine would be a small, local club focused on service in the community,” Mavrick adds.
