PALMYRA — Fluvanna County High School students can buy school supplies and new clothes, tax free during Aug. 6-8. School administration hopes the new clothes will cover a little more skin than what has been seen in years past.
“The dress code is not stricter. The dress code is more defined,” FCHS principal James Barlow said. “The other thing that has change on what we would like to see happen is simply, we’ve talked more, illustrated more and defined more on what our expectations are.”
Previously the dress code was defined based on an individual basis. A student could wear any bottom covering that ended longer than that student’s finger tips when arms held at one’s side.
Now the code reads, “The top layer of dresses, tops worn as dresses, shorts, and skirts must [end] at the knee cap at all times. Leggings or [bike] shorts may not be worn alone as pants. No undergarments may be visible at any time.”
Students also could wear shirts with shoulder seams that were three fingers wide. Now the seam is defined as to be 2.5 inches wide and hang on a student’s natural shoulder. Administration added that shirts must not show any skin in the waistline, front or the back while standing.

Some students and parents are upset over the change saying it is difficult to find apparel that meets the guidelines. Current fashion trends have moved away from female bottoms reaching the knee.
“We know it is difficult to find something right at the knee.” Barlow continued, “What we don’t want is [bottoms] so short they come to the thigh or even higher.”
Barlow states the ‘knee rule’ is a guideline the school administration always strived for but it was never clearly stated. If anything, the new writing leaves less interpretation and less bias to certain body types.
“We have always had it at the knee, it’s just that we had some ladies with short arms, of course their dress could be shorter. So we just defined it more,” Barlow said.
Parents have voiced concerns the dress code will make after-school events, like football games, difficult to dress for without fearing school repercussions. Barlow says the re-written dress code is to take away from schoolday distractions and will not be enforced during after-school events.
