Extracurricular activities will have a fee

PALMYRA — The Fluvanna School Board approved a “play to participate” program to help fund the extracurricular activities at the secondary level.
The athletic and activity departments do not receive direct funding from the school board’s budget. The only funding the departments receive is for stipends related to the instructor or coaches.
The departments have been forced to fund themselves through ticket receipts or fundraising. The Fluvanna County High School Athletic Boosters Club has almost completely disbanded putting a harder squeeze on the athletic department.
A proposal from the high school was to help fund the extracurricular activities by forcing students to pay $60 per activity to participate. The fee can be reduced based on ability to pay. Also, there will be scholarships and other ways to fund the fee rather than just paying it outright.
FCHS principal James Barlow told the School Board that not being able to pay would not force a student to sit out of an extracurricular activity. Barlow noted the $60 is not as high as Albemarle County which charges $75 or Orange County whose fee is $100.
The high school will form a committee to look into how to implement the pay to participate program for next school year. The motion to pass the program carried unanimously.
