District, local school earn excellence awards

Richmond — Fluvanna earned the Virginia Board of Education Excellence Award as part of the Virginia Index Performance Incentive, announced Jan. 12 by the Virginia Department of Education.

Only 15 school divisions were bestowed the honor, Superintendent Dr. Thomas Smith announced at the Jan. 13 School Board meeting.

The honored divisions “have met all state and federal accountability benchmarks for at least two consecutive year,” the press release said. The districts, “have made significant progress toward goals for increased student achievement and expanded educational opportunities set by [the former] Governor Kaine and the board.”

The board added more rigorous benchmarks and objectives in English, mathematics, science and history and social science in July 2009.

The award is the second-tier honor in the VIP program, the first being Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence.

Fluvanna County High School was one of 281 schools to earn the Board Education Competence to Excellence Award. The award is given to schools that have met all state and federal benchmarks for at least two consecutive years and are making progress toward goals of the the former governor and board.
