Denby powers Fluvanna past Orange

Summary
PALMYRA — Fluvanna used timely hits and a grand slam from Tyler Denby to beat the Orange Hornets 8-4 Tuesday night.

“I was just trying to hit a line drive. I was getting good pitches all night and fouling them back,” said Denby who scored two runs. “I just tried staying on top of the ball and hit line drive.”

Fluvanna was down 3-2 before entering the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs and a runner on first, Fluvanna loaded the bases with a Ryan Foster walk. Zack Miller tied the game on an infield hit keeping them loaded for Denby.

After working the count, Denby took UVa signee Derek Justice yard to clear the bases. The Flucos added another run before retiring.

FCHS scored all eight of their runs with two outs. The first inning Denby scored on a Hunter Shepherd single to deep left field. Foster plated pinch runner Sam Turner in the second inning on an infield hit.

Fluvanna didn’t have a hit from the second inning until a pinch hit from Turner in the sixth. FCHS stranded five runners during the hitting drought, including a bases loaded opportunity in the fourth.

“We’re still having to improve. Every once in a while we still play tight.” Fluvanna head coach Mike Sheridan continued, “We are starting to relax.”

The Flucos (4-6, 3-3 Jefferson District) are currently on a three-game winning streak will take their act on the road for three games in a row. The first stop is Charlottesville then Louisa before finishing at Western Albemarle. Two of the final eight games are away from Palmyra.
