PALMYRA — The assistant superintendent for administration Maurice Carter will become the interim superintendent when Dr. Tom Smith retires at the end of June.
Carter will remain acting-superintendent until the School Board ends its national search and hires a permanent superintendent.
Carter has been with Fluvanna for many years as a high school vice-principal and principal as well as work in the School Board office. He is a local graduating from Fluvanna County High School. Two other members of the Carter family work in Fluvanna County Public Schools’ system.
Carter will begin July 1. The anticipation is the School Board will not need Carter for too long as they look to name a replacement in July. The start date of a permanent superintendent is not decided yet.
Almost for certain, Fluvanna will not hire Carter full-time because, reportedly, he is not certified to be a superintendent. The Virginia School Board Association is assisting the School Board in hiring a replacement.
