Budget woes could force layoffs, cuts

February 26, 2010 by Bryan Rothamel · View Comments

PALMYRA — Fluco Blog has learned how Fluvanna proposes to balance the troublesome School Board budget.

An education source says the proposed cuts include a four percent cut in pay for all staff. It is also propose there will be no new hires unless required by state regulations, no stipends given to staff leaders of athletics and activities and over 30 layoffs of staff.

The source requested anonymity because there has been no formal announcement. Superintendent Dr. Tom Smith is anticipated to propose these cuts to the School Board next week.

Before these proposed cuts, the School Board’s budget had already been trimmed over $2 million dollars compared to last year’s budget. More cuts were necessary because of a shortfall in funds from the state and locality.

The next budget work session for the School Board will be March 1 at 5 pm. The Board of Supervisors have been invited to make it another joint budget work session. The supervisors will have a public budget work session for presentations from agencies on March 3 at 6 pm.

Fluco Blog will be covering the March 1 work session. Check for updates on Facebook and twitter to see if these proposes make it to the budget.
