Updated 11/19/2009 16:45 Water service has been restored for the Aqua Virginia customers. The boil water advisory is still in effect.

Now that service is restored, Aqua Virginia needs to test water samples from throughout the waterworks system. Doug Caldwell, field director for the Lexington field office of the Office of Drinking Water, said the advisory is dependent on the bacterial test results.

Once the Lexington office deems the levels acceptable, they recommend to the health director of the Thomas Jefferson Health District, Dr. Lillian Peake, the advisory to be lifted. Only Peake has the authorization to place and lift a boil advisory in the TJHD.

Caldwell said the advisory could be lifted within 24 hours but it is still dependent on when the tests occur and the results.

Aqua Virginia customers experienced this same procedure earlier this year on April 29. Aqua Virginia had a problem with a main valve causing low pressure throughout the waterworks and causing a boil advisory.

The Virginia Department of Health-Office of Drinking Water has issued a boil advisory for the entire Aqua Virginia system.

Aqua Virginia reported a break of an 8-inch watermain near the main storage tank to the Office of Drinking Water. The break of an important line resulted in low water pressure and flow for the entire waterworks. A loss of pressure can result in contamination for the distribution system.

Aqua Virginia has instructed all residents to boil water until Saturday, Nov. 21. The date may vary depending on test results.

Those affected by the advisory can call Aqua Virginia at (877) 987-2782 for more information. The LMOA cable channel will continually post updates.

The Aqua Virginia system has approximately 4,700 connections and 12,000 people on the service.
