FORK UNION — Fork Union Military Academy will host a small Relay for Life event on April 20 for the entire campus.
Included in the event will be five teams from the upper school, a middle school team and a staff team. The upper school teams will be broken down through the five companies: Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta and Echo.
Parents and alumni are encouraged to to participate and support the event. More information and how to donate is available at www.relayforlife.org/fuma.
Relay for Life is a volunteer driven fundraising event for the American Cancer Society. Relay for Life begun in 1985 by Dr. Gordy Klatt. Klatt spent 24 hours and 83 miles circling the track at Baker Stadium at the University of Puget Sound. He raised $27,000 in his 24 hours.
The first team Relay for Life was in 1986, known as the City of Destiny Classic 24-hour Run Against Cancer. The event raised $33,000 between the 19 teams. There are now more than 5,200 relays in the United States and more than $4.5 billion fundraised through Relay for Life events.
