Fluco fans filled the Shoebox Thursday night for a close match between the Flucos and the Western Albemarle Warriors. It was a close match as both teams were pushing for a win and the Jefferson District Tournament title.
Western took the first two games, winning 25-21 and 25-19. The Flucos then gained fire and took the third game from the Warriors, winning 25-22. The intensity of the Flucos quickly picked up after the win. The score bounced back and forth throughout the whole fourth game, but the Warriors finished on top with the score of 25-23.
The Flucos fought hard and never gave up. Mia Loyd led the Flucos with 16 kills and one block.
“Our goal of the night was to go out and play our game the way we know we can,” Loyd stated.
Both outside hitters, Kayla Walker and Mandy Kline, had a strong night at the net as well. Walker recorded ten kills on the night, while Kline put down nine.
“We played our hardest, but sometimes you don’t get the result you want,” said Kline.
Senior setter Courtney Tyree had 16 assists; sophomore Sammi Toy averaged 15 assists.
“Our offense was on top of things and ready to do the job, but we just could not manage to pull through,” Tyree said.
Head coach Christi Harlowe-Garrett said, “We played our game! It was a four game match where there was a seven point difference total. It could have been anyone’s game—unfortunately, the ball fell or the whistle blew too many times on our side.”
Senior Walker’s hard work and determination earned her Jefferson District Player of the Year. The Flucos travel to Kettle Run for the first round of the Regional II tournament Tuesday.
