A clean sweep brings hardware to Fluvanna

Charlottesville — Fluvanna became the Jefferson District Tournament Champions by defeating the Western Albemarle Warriors 38-33 Friday night.
“I like seeing the smile on the faces of the girls because they put in work since day one,” head coach Chad White as he held the tournament and regular season trophies after the game.
Fluvanna was led by Mia Loyd with 11 points. Ashleigh Harris, Millicent Williams and K-anna Loyd all finished with seven points. Sarah Ryan chipped in six points.
FCHS (AA No. 8 AP) put Western Albemarle in a corner in the start of the second quarter. Up five points to start, the Flucos scored seven straight points behind a 3-pointer from Harris and baskets from Mia and Ryan. With a double point advantage late in first half, FCHS never came within three points of relinquishing the lead.
In the waning moments of the game, Fluvanna tried slowing the game and limiting possessions. FCHS had an eight point lead when Western sharpshooter Virginia Carew hit a jump shot then one from behind the arc with 43 seconds left.
“When the score was as close as it was the first time we just sat there and tried to run the clock down, tried to run the clock down, tried to run the clock down,” Harris said. Fluvanna defeated Western 34-30 in early January.
Ryan was fouled on the possession following Carew’s 3-pointer and hit the first of two free throws. Mia grabbed the rebound to take even more time off the clock.
Western regained possession with under 20 seconds but Mia stole an errant pass to seal the victory.
Fluvanna is the second school in Jefferson District girls’ basketball history to win the regular season and tournament titles. The other being 2000s decade powerhouse Charlottesville High School.
“Its for [K-anna] and Sarah. They’ve worked so hard — four years they’ve worked — to get here and we’re not satisfied with one 2010 [on the school banner],” Mia said as she was overcome with emotion. She called her the emotion “happy tears.”
This is the first district title since 1987 when Fluvanna played in the single-A James River District.
FCHS next plays Thursday as they host in semifinals of the Region II, District 3 Tournament. The Flucos are the number 1 seed in the regional tournament hoping to add another trophy and number to their resume. The top two teams from the regional tournament will advanced to District 3 State Tournament held in Richmond.
“We are just going to take this excitement from these two trophies and bring it in the regionals. And we have home-court [advantage] so hopefully that’ll help us too,” K-anna said.
The Flucos improves to 20-1 overall and 14-0 in the Jefferson District. Fluvanna’s only blemish was over Christmas Break in the William Monroe Bash to Page. The only games FCHS has not won by double digits are the two against
Western Albemarle.
Thursday’s game will be broadcasted as part of Fluco Blog Live! Game of the Week series. Game time has not been set yet.
