6 Flucos run in regional event

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Six members of the Fluvanna cross country teams competed in various races at the Foot Locker Cross County South Regional Championships.

Chris Markham ran in the boys’ senior race placing 18th overall with a time of 16:20. Stephanie Bossong ran 19:48 for a 26th place finish in the girls’ senior race.

In the junior girls’ race Nicki Douma ran 19:34 for 22nd overall and Brooke Haislip came in at 21:24 for 78th place.

Travis Moe finished 199th in the sophomore boys’ race with a time of 19:23 while Bridget Bossong ran 21:23 for 57th in the freshman girls’ race.

The biggest races were the seeded races. The girls’ seeded winner was Sophie Chase from Burke, Va. with a time of 17:05. The boys’ seeded winner was Sean McGorty from Fairfax, Va. He finished with a time of 14:28 and set a new course record.

Also joining in was the Fluvanna girls’ cross county coach and back-to-back Jefferson District girls’ cross country coach of the year Rose Brogan. Brogan ran a 22:56 in the women’s master race. The finish placed her sixth.

The Foot Locker Cross Country Championships are regional with races in California, Wisconsin, New York and the south race in North Carolina. The top ten from the seeded races from each regional run again at the national finals on Dec. 8 in San Diego. All races are five kilometers.

The south regional was raced on the McAlpine Greenway Park. Conditions for the race were sunny and cool with a temperature of 48 degrees. Officials reported the course was in good condition.
